It tastes like chicken! - Giza, Egypt and dubai, united arab emirates - 2022-2024

“How would you like it? Rare, medium-rare, medium…?”, “Well-done mate”, “Yeah no, sorry we don’t do the here!” Welcome to the world of camel meat, oh and the odd camel for farming aka physical labour.

On any given day at this 40 year old family business there are XXXX (I promised the owners I wouldn’t disclose the true numbers due to big brother always watching and our mutual “love” of taxes) of these absolute units darting around with top speeds of 45mph, one has to be on the lookout as if they were a meerkat and have the agility of a malnourished Bolshoi Ballerina to avoid been floored or maimed, but I’ll let you into a little secret, the adrenaline is seductive.

These domesticated beauties are sourced from the African continent Egypt, Sudan, Somali, Djibouti, Kenya etc... With a 40-year lifespan and their ability to literally carry everything including the kitchen sink, they fully deserve their nickname “ships of the desert”.

With an average value of US$800 but when slaughtered for meat which is supposedly a lot healthier than beef as it contains less fat and has lower levels of cholesterol they command a value of US$1,500-$2,000. Camel meat is BIG business!
